In 2020, we had bought and installed a few smart lights and a smart plug. Although, the smart lights were rated to last 10,000 hours, but within three years, they were completely dead. The hardware was fine—the company had simply shut-down their servers, turning millions of working devices (across all categories) into expensive paperweights.
Frustrated, we took the devices apart. We discovered that this "Indian" smart home brand was actually just white-labeling Chinese IoT modules, apps, and cloud software. Even worse, we found serious allegations that this specific-vendor was routing user data to overseas servers (mostly to Mainland China).
We started digging into the rest of the industry and found a much bigger problem. Building a full-stack IoT ecosystem from scratch is difficult, which is why 13 out of 16 mainstream Indian smart-home brands don't do it. Instead, they outsource their IoT hardware, software, and cloud infrastructure to Chinese third-party vendors.
Because these companies don't own their smart tech, the customer pays the price:
No lifespan guarantees: Brands won't commit to how long they will keep their servers running before pulling the plug on your devices.
Zero data privacy: There are no strict "Do Not Sell" policies. Many brands secretly monetize your habits by sharing data with advertisers.
Bait-and-switch pricing: Some companies launch with "free" support, realize cloud servers are expensive, and then hold your devices hostage behind a forced monthly subscription.
Since we design and develop FULL-STACK internet-connected products in-house, it provides us with better control over the entire technology stack & reduced dependency on third-party vendors. It helps us provide end users with products that have unique features, assured data privacy, device security, and long-term device connectivity support.
